The Talodin Headwaters

The River Talodin, the lifeblood of Zarvand, rises from snowmelt in the southern Spine mountains held by Tharax, and its headwater streams hold small cold-water trout. In 840 Khaasar Talodeer the Magnificent took the headwaters and planted the fortress of Faashab-Talodin on Tharaxi ground, and it has been a sore point for three centuries. After the dry summer of 1137, Khaasar Avisteer III wrote asking that no dam ever be built on the headwaters, and Tharax did not reply. In Zarvani myth the river was a serpent from the Spine, so whoever holds the headwaters holds the serpent's head. Castavar has noticed. Each spring a girl walks from Faashab-Talodin to Lake Shorooq to greet the river, and no one may harm her, even in war. ---
