The Shattered Isles

This broken archipelago of reefs, sea-caves and coves lies off Castavar's southwest coast. It was once the island kingdom of Vexara, whose kings preyed on Castavari shipping for two centuries until Castavar's fleet destroyed them in the Salt Wars of 410–415. Castavar never settled the islands. The survivors became the Salt Brotherhood, formally sworn in 712, which now counts about 12,000 people in nine crews under Captain-Queen Sormerva Vex, who wants the Isles recognized as a free kingdom. Monk seals breed in the sea-caves, petrels nest in the pirates' cliffs, land-crabs swarm the beaches at night, and the spiny isle agave gives the Brotherhood rope and a rough spirit. The Isles trade quietly with the Coastwrights and the Waheli of Moss Harbor, and one crew, the Long Reach, sails as far east as Chaiyo.
