Lake Surmave

Lake Surmave, "the Mirror," is the largest lake in the world, too wide to see across, and the hub of all inland trade. The River Wenvorm, the golden river, empties into it from the west, and the River Tsanha carries its water east across the Grass Sea; Aldmere holds its western and northern shores and Caelvenne its southern delta and eastern shore, and Caelvenne's galleys and mirror towers command its waters. The Accord that began the calendar was signed on one of its islands, and the lake has shaped history ever since: the Marrowmere Wars over its tolls (255–294), the Lake Comet that hung over it for forty nights in 367 and returned in 960, and the Great Surmave Flood of 539, which raised it twelve feet, drowned Solvaine's lower city and the lake-guard people of its north shore, the Marrowmere Wardens, and uncovered the Drowned Gate. Its waters hold Surmave whitefish, perch, mirror pike, delta eels, rare lake sturgeon reserved for the prince's table, and mirror-weed that fouls galley oars; mirror swans, terns and otters live along its shores. Beneath it lie the sunken roads of the Age of Ruins, and the Drowned Court believes a sleeping city lies there too.
