Serpent Pyramids

Step-pyramids of the Age of Ruins, southeast of Sutzam, built of the same black stone as the sunken roads under Lake Surmave. The southern ruins are the home of the Serpent Clans, about eight thousand pyramid-dwellers older than Sutzam who kept the Sun-and-Serpent faith when the river villages half-forgot it; Ixatl's priesthood is drawn from them, and they think he is their instrument. Fruit bats roost in the ruins, sun-orchids grow only on the pyramid stones, and venomous red centipedes live in the cracks. The Tzalan say never to sleep facing a pyramid, because the First Sun's dreams leak out, and that the howlers' dawn roar is the pyramids calling.
