AETHORRA
The Cherüsh Horde

Cherüsh

1. How It Sounds

Rolling and even, made to carry across open grass. Stress falls on the last syllable. The heart of the language is vowel harmony: every word is either a back word (vowels a, o, u) or a front word (vowels e, ö, ü), never both, and i can go in either. Every ending has two forms and takes the one that matches: yarbort becomes yarborttun (horses), but cherüsh would become cherüshtün. A speaker who breaks harmony sounds like a Kaishoni reading from a primer.

Letters Sound Example
a, o, u back vowels: father, go, rule moqchon (that)
i as in machine; goes with either set turiq (this)
kh a rough h in the throat; back words only khilbin (those)
gh a gargled g; back words only ghaq (any)
q a k deep in the throat; at the start of a word only in question words turiq (this)
ch, sh, j, ts as in church, ship, jam, cats tsol (not)
ng as in sing kingzin (these)
y as in yes yelün (few)

Question words all begin with q-: quros (what), qon (who), qinush (which), qay (where), qush (when), qosh (why), qis (how). No other word does.

2. How It Works

Counting: tesh, kuq, shur, boq, ghir, tsök, tsal, ghun, tsat, sholt (one to ten), all one syllable, so they can be shouted from a saddle. kuqsholt (twenty, "two-ten"); zoq (hundred); tsaz (thousand). A captain of a hundred is an odayas.

Names. One given name, which is a plain word, and an English by-name for readers when one has been earned: Sarsak (arrow), Ghorsan (grass), Bagoq the Elder (drum), Juryan Redbow (bowstring). The ruler of all the tribes adds the title after the name: Sarsak Tolmar. Tribes are named with words too: the Shiygöl (herd), the Shusa (many), the Angsit (old), the Nintang (east), the Jilmu (wolf). The people call themselves Cherüsh, "free."

3. Phrases
